WE ARE Family Showcase- Sewing
The importance of Design and Technology as a subject is not just valuable when looking ahead to potential career paths, but also for fundamental life skills such as threading a needle, sewing on a button or fixing a rip in clothing. With a heightened awareness of so-called ‘fast fashion’, these skills can also contribute to sustainability. During a DT lesson safety practices are explicitly taught therefore scissor safety rules are covered before the sewing starts.
During our workshop children had the opportunity to read and follow instructions to sew a winter decoration along with a family member.
The following technical skills were developed during the morning:
cut thread stitch design join tie loop
By the end of the session, the children had a decoration to treasure for the years to come and a shared experience with their mum or dad. All children took home a starter sewing kit with a basic guide to beginning sewing and we hope this inspires them to ‘mend not throw away!’
