Physical Education

Article 31. Every child has the right to rest, relax, play and to take part in cultural and creative activities.

 I am happy to do PE because I can keep even more fit and it makes me relax.


Penwortham Primary School fosters a culture where children are provided with the opportunities to explore and pursue their interests in PE. 

PE at Penwortham takes a holistic approach to learning with physical, social and emotional development at the core. Through education we aspire to embed a lifelong commitment to health and fitness in our pupils.

What do the children learn and when?

EYFS and KS1 focus on developing fundamental skills such as; agility, balance and coordination as well as throwing and catching.

In KS2 children are able to use these skills to develop their knowledge and understanding of invasion games such as football, basketball, netball, tag rugby and hockey. These skills are also transferable to striking and fielding games such as cricket, tri golf and net games such as tennis. The breakdown of techniques along with peer assessment is explicitly taught in lessons to help further deepen pupils' understanding. Values are also at the forefront of lessons with children learning the importance of; friendship, teamwork, respect and determination. 

After school sports clubs are also offered throughout the year, with teams taking part in regional and national competitions.

The content of the national curriculum has been mapped out to provide children with opportunities to build on existing knowledge and skills.  Progression is planned in the scheme of work so that children are increasingly challenged as they move up through the school - please click the image below to explore this further. 

How do we teach physical education?

All pupils have two hours of PE timetabled each week to cover the six main areas of the National Curriculum (dance, gymnastics, games, swimming, athletics, and outdoor and adventurous activities).  Swimming is offered for children in KS2.  During the two weekly sessions, children are taught the basics of sport – how to prepare the body for activity by warming up and stretching, health and fitness, skills, team work and tactical and positional awareness.

Effective delivery of the National Curriculum expectations will ensure that children develop into thinking physical beings and doing physical beings which impact on the behavioural change to equip them for lifelong participation.  We are committed to developing well-balanced children ready for the 21st Century; Head (thinking) Hands (doing) and Heart (behavioural change)


Each term, learning leads to a sporting festival outcome where the children participate in a competitive competition with their peers, utilising their learnt skills and gives children the opportunity to put into place the techniques acquired throughout the unit and implement them in a competitive setting. This enables clear progressions from the games taught in lessons through to Level 2 – borough and level 3 – regional competitions. This also provides opportunities for end of unit assessments by teachers and self assessment by pupils, with the use of IT equipment for evidence and peer reflection. 

In years 1, 2, 3 and 4 the focus is on developing the fundamental skills learnt in the early years by introducing specific sports to further progress theses techniques and skills. We very much focus on repetition of the basics in a fun, game based and sometimes competitive way while introducing small sided games and end of unit competitions and festivals.

In years 5 and 6 children cover a more varied curriculum, here we are looking at a more advanced teaching method whilst still working on the basics. Lessons are catered for all ability ranges and leave children more skilled at the end of the lesson than at the start.

Wandsworth Let’s Dance Celebration Day

During PE lessons all classes in Years 1-6 learnt the Rockin’ Robin dance routine as part of the AFC Wimbledon Foundation & Southfields Academy Let’s Dance Event.   The children enjoyed learning the routine. Especially coming up with imaginative and creative moves for the freestyle section.   Enjoy the final performance below!

Keeping Active At Home
